Michael J. Piegare Foundation

Michael J. PiegareLacrosse is a sport that pushes players to their most extreme limits of guts, endurance and speed. It hones in on their passion and develops their senses mentally and tests them physically.

Lacrosse challenges it players to the maximum. Lacrosse players partake in other sports but no other sport partakes in its players like lacrosse.

Through discipline, perseverance, and a lot of perspiration, this sport transforms players into young men with strong personal convictions including respect, integrity, loyalty and motivation. It prepares them to lead positive influential lives as adults.

That being said, let me tell you about one such very special young man who personifies the spirit of lacrosse. On July 24, 1987, a baby boy, Michael J., was born to Joseph and Therese Piegare in a small lacrosse town in Nassau County, New York. If you are familiar with the sport, you already know that Cold Spring Harbor is a small town geographically but a huge part of lacrosse. Michael was no exception. Lacrosse became as much a part of Michael’s life as his family and his family was all about lacrosse. Throughout high school and his years in college Michael was known as a teammate. A positive influence, an encourager, a leader, a supporter, a friend. The kind of person who would encourage other players and push them as close to their limits as he would push himself to his. Michael’s younger brother, Kevin, followed in his footsteps to play lacrosse “just like Mike.” As if two sons playing lacrosse wasn’t enough to make any parents proud, Michael and Kevin’s younger sister, Katelyn, has also taken her position on the field. Amazing family, amazing teammates, amazing friends…lacrosse players.

Michael was extraordinary off the lacrosse field as well. Sharing his time with his siblings and cousins as well as being a big brother to kids at the lacrosse camps at which he volunteered. A contagious smile, infectious laugh, a gentle soul yet a strong enough man to command attention. Michael’s family molded Michael into a warm, loving, generous, kind, young man. Lacrosse molded Michael into the epitome of its essence: strong, determined, loyal, motivated and intelligent. Tragically, in November of 2008, a fluke car accident snuffed out the light of our lives known as Michael.
We tell you this story about Michael because, even in his afterlife, he continues to give to those less fortunate than himself. We are donating 10% of the proceeds of our sales to the Michael J. Piegare Fund. This organization has been established by his family to ensure that Michael’s generosity, kindness and love of lacrosse lives on.
